Alagar Kovil, also known as Azhagar Kovil, is a renowned Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, situated about 21 kilometers northeast of Madurai in Tamil Nadu. The temple is beautifully located at the foothills of the Alagar Hills, part of the Eastern Ghats, surrounded by natural greenery and serene landscapes. This peaceful setting enhances its spiritual atmosphere and makes it both a pilgrimage center and a popular tourist destination.
The temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped here as Kallazhagar or Sundararaja Perumal, meaning “the handsome lord.” The main deity stands in an elegant posture and is said to be made of a special medicinal mixture known as Aparanji. The goddess Sundaravalli Thayar is worshipped as his consort. Alagar Kovil is one of the 108 Divya Desams, the sacred Vishnu temples praised in the hymns of the Alvars, the Tamil Vaishnavite saints. Because of this, the temple holds great importance in the Sri Vaishnava tradition.
Historically, the temple dates back to the early Pandya period, around the 6th century CE. It was later expanded and renovated by the Chola and Vijayanagara rulers, who contributed significantly to its architecture and inscriptions. Several stone inscriptions found within the temple complex provide information about ancient donations, rituals, and administrative practices, reflecting its long-standing religious and cultural significance.
Architecturally, Alagar Kovil is built in the traditional Dravidian style. The temple features a five-tiered rajagopuram (main entrance tower) and intricately carved mandapams (halls). The detailed sculptures on the pillars depict various mythological scenes and deities. Within the complex, there are separate shrines for Andal and Yoga Narasimha. Near the temple flows a sacred stream called Noopura Ganga, which is believed to have divine origins and is considered holy by devotees.
One of the most famous events associated with Alagar Kovil is the Chithirai Festival, celebrated during April & May. During this grand festival, Lord Kallazhagar is taken in a grand procession to the Vaigai River in Madurai to symbolically attend the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi. This event attracts thousands of devotees and forms an important part of Madurai’s cultural and religious celebrations.
