Sri Annamalaiyar Temple, Tiruvannamalai

Annamalaiyar Temple

The Arunachalesvara Temple, also known as Annamalaiyar Temple, is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in India. Located at the base of Arunachala Hill in Tiruvannamalai, this grand temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Arunachalesvara (the “Lord of the Holy Fire”).

It represents the Fire (Agni) element among the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams – the five temples symbolizing the five elements of nature. The temple complex spreads across about 25 acres, making it one of the largest temples in India. Its towering Rajagopuram (main gateway tower) stands around 66 meters (217 feet) tall.

Historical Significance

  • The temple’s origins date back over 1,000 years, with major contributions from the Chola dynasty, Vijayanagara Empire, and later the Nayak dynasty.
  • In Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva appeared as an infinite column of fire here to settle a dispute between Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma, signifying his supreme power.
  • The temple is deeply connected with the great sage Ramana Maharshi, who lived at the nearby Sri Ramanasramam.
  • Arunachala Hill itself is considered a manifestation of Lord Shiva.

Festivals & Celebrations

  • Karthigai Deepam (Most Famous Festival): The grand Karthigai Deepam festival (Nov–Dec) is the most important celebration. A huge lamp is lit on top of Arunachala Hill, visible for miles, symbolizing the original column of fire form of Shiva. Lakhs of devotees attend this festival every year.
  • Pournami Girivalam: On every full moon night, devotees perform Girivalam (circumambulation) — walking barefoot around the 14 km path encircling Arunachala Hill.
